Anti-Comfort

If you’re stuck in your fitness routine, it might be because you’re too addicted to comfort.

As human beings, we love comfort. When given the choice, we’d rather sit than stand. We would rather rest than run…And we would almost always definitely eat, rather than exercise.

We can’t be too hard on ourselves. It’s part of our primal nature. We are wired to rest, relax, and stock up on food in case we face crazy weather or some other attack.

This is why it’s important to adopt a few anti-comfort habits.

I know it sounds a little silly, but you’ve probably heard that great things happen when you get outside your comfort zone.

This concept is applicable for fitness as well.

Try to implement a few things a week that push you outside of your comfort zone.

Here’s what that looks like for me.

  1. Cold shower – 5 minutes…I’ve written a whole article about this
  2. Fifteen minutes of high intensity interval training or some type of conditioning. Now, I’m not saying you should make yourself throw up, but there is something to be said for consistently pushing yourself beyond what’s comfortable. For me that often looks like doing a few extra intervals on the bike (which I hate by the way!)
  3. Lifting heavy weights 2x a week. To be blunt, sometimes it just sucks to lift really heavy things. It takes a lot of work! But the benefits far outweigh the discomfort.

It’s easy to keep things status quo and stay inside your comfort zone. But if you want to push into more progress and make your body more resilient it’s time to embrace the idea of “anti-comfort”.
